Crusader's Prayer
The evening wind across the sand
Blows memories to me;
The thousand miles that I have come
To fight for Calvary
In answer to the call of Rome,
"Obey the will of God",
To stand before the Holy Gates
Where once my Savior stood.
A landless second son was I
With nothing but my sword.
No place for me, except to fight,
Obedient to my Lord;
To journey to the Holy Lands,
A servant of the cross;
A sword to defend Christendom,
Regardless of the cost.
In war against the Saracen
I've won my spurs and arms.
My sword and lance has dripped with blood
Till Gory's lost its charms.
I dreamt once of Jerusalem,
The city of our Lord.
But now my thoughts turn homeward bound
For Caledonia's shore.
Under Ben Loyal's heathered slopes
A lady waits for me,
To be my bride when I return
From far across the sea.
And so I kiss the cross and pray
Ere battle's joined anew:
Jesu keep me safe from harm
Whilest now I fight for You.
I pray, Lord, now for victory
Over the Saracen;
To liberate Jerusalem
For pilgrims to go in;
To bring to end this high crusade
To free the Holy Shrines,
That I with honor may go home
To cherish what is mine
Blows memories to me;
The thousand miles that I have come
To fight for Calvary
In answer to the call of Rome,
"Obey the will of God",
To stand before the Holy Gates
Where once my Savior stood.
A landless second son was I
With nothing but my sword.
